Here in Ohio there has been a new piece of legislation introduced to ban the owning of pit bull type breeds throughout the state. I find this type of legislation to be unfair and unnecessary. No breed of dog is more likely to attack a human than another. It all comes down to the individual dog and the owner of that dog. Any dog with the right, or should I say wrong owner can potentially cause harm to a human. It all comes down to the training and care of the animal. Dogs do not premeditate their actions, they react to the situation that they are put in. More of a problem is the fact that people don’t teach their children to not approach strange dogs. How many times do you see a child going up to a strange dog because they want to pet it? I know that this has happened when I’m out with my dog. I have no problem with allowing someone to pet my dog, but ask first. You don’t know what any dog is going to do in any given situation. Don’t punish an entire breed just because of some bad owners.
So recently here in Ohio Gov. Strickland signed into law revisions to Ohio’s concealed carry law, making the law less restrictive. The main part of this bill was to “ provide{s} legal assurances that a person who opens fire on a potential attacker or intruder, whether to protect his home, property, or another person on his property, is presumed to be acting in self-defense, provided the attacker ‘is in the process of entering or has entered, unlawfully and without privilege to do so, the residence or vehicle occupied by the person using the defensive force.’ ” There are those that are on both sides of this thing, but I think that the law is now more clear and falls more in line with Ohio’s Bill of Rights.
In any case, I’m glad that Strickland signed the bill into law. It’s good to have a Democratic governor who has a similar view on guns. Not all of us on the left side of the aisle are anti-gun, even if some of us keep it a secret.
